The City of St. James is currently accepting applications for the position of full time Police Officer. Position open until filled.

 

WHY BE A POLICE OFFICER IN ST. JAMES?

The City of St. James is located 90 miles West of St. Louis, MO off of Interstate 44. The St. James Police Department consists of 10 full time employees to include 5 Patrol Officers, 2 Sergeants, 1 Lieutenant, 1 Police Secretary and a Chief of Police. Our department services a population of 4,216 citizens. Our officers stay busy responding to calls and being proactive by initiating their own investigations.

The equipment offered by our department include late model take home fully equipped Ford Police Interceptors or Dodge Chargers. We provide our officers with up to date equipment to include side arms, patrol rifles, and Tasers. Full uniforms are provided by the department free of charge to include duty gear.

Our police officers receive competitive pay with health insurance paid 100% for the officer. All of our officers receive monthly in service training. We provide paid training to our officers in specialized fields to include investigations, narcotics, fraud and other various areas of law enforcement.

The St. James Police Department is community oriented. Our officers our involved in programs such as DARE, community speaking engagements and fundraising for various organizations

Our officers rotate shifts every 3 months. Some of the shifts consist of 8 hr and 12 hr shifts, with 12 hr shifts having every other weekend off.

Bourbeuse St., St. James, MO 65559 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. AND 5:00 P.M. (Closed 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM), Monday through Friday. If you are driving a long distance to pick up an application or drop one off please call ahead of time to make sure someone will be in the office to assist you.

DUTIES

Processes and operations for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of federal and state laws as well as municipal ordinances. Patrolling the city limits of St. James, responding to calls for service, conducting preliminary investigations, enforcing traffic and parking laws, Participating in Community Policing activities, investigating traffic related incidents, writing reports, pursuing and detaining suspects, and making arrests.

Applicants should have excellent communication skills and a history of demonstrated common sense and sound decision-making. Applicants must be able to analyze situations quickly and objectively.

Conditions present high stress and threat to personal safety during periods of search and seizure and arrest. You may be exposed to toxic materials, bloodborne pathogens and other infectious environment. You may have to deal with unruly or dangerous individuals, unsafe building sites and deadly force and always risk the possibilities of injury. You may be required to extend work schedule during emergency situations and called in at any time to work a shift.

Officers may be scheduled to work an 8 hour shift or 12 hour shifts. 12 hour shifts have a 3 day weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) every other week.

PROMOTIONS

Eligible officers compete for advancement into supervisory positions. These positions include Corporal, Sergeant and Lieutenant.

 

REQUIREMENTS

All candidates for the position of Police Officer must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to apply:

CITIZENSHIP: Be a U.S. citizen AND citizen of Missouri at the time of employment
DRIVERS LICENSE: Valid Missouri Drivers License at the time of employment
AGE: Be at least 21 years of age at commission
EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED
CERTIFICATION: Missouri POST Certified
MILITARY: Must have an “Honorable” discharge, or a discharge “Under Honorable Conditions” if having served in the military.
ARREST RECORD: Must be free from conviction of a Felony.  A Class “A” Misdemeanor conviction
will be cause for immediate dismissal from the process, unless otherwise directed by the Chief of
Police.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough background investigation will be conducted on all police applicants in the areas of past employment record, reputation, personal references, neighborhood reputation, police record check, credit history and military record (when applicable). The background investigation may be concluded with a polygraph examination in an attempt to verify information received from and about the applicant.

PHYSICAL HEALTH AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS: These examinations may be
given after a conditional offer of employment by a Department designated physician or psychologist and may consist of various organic tests to determine the applicant’s suitability for the rigors of police work. The psychological exam will be used to determine the applicant’s suitability for police work.  If a Department designated physician or psychologist finds that the applicant meets physical and psychological standards for employment, the applicant will be appointed.

Police Reserves are unpaid, but can be promoted to a full time position with the following benefits

SALARY:
$32,500 Yearly

VACATION:
½ day every month for the 1st year
1 day every month after 1st year
1 ½ days vacation after 10 years

SICK TIME:
1 1/4 days per month

RETIREMENT:
Takes affect after 6 months

LIFE INSURANCE:
$15K life insurance

HEATH INSURANCE:
100% paid for employee 60% paid for family

11 paid holidays at time and a half
Uniforms & weapons furnished
Probationary period: 6 Months
Take home patrol vehicle
Overtime or compensatory time earned after 40 hours a week
